Nogmaals... inlichtingenwerk / Again... reference work

For English translation, please see the blue text below

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Oh well, once again about the reference job this time. Because it just looks that much like my own job too, that's why. And it also touches the reasons why I came to Second Life (SL) in the first place.

This evening I had my reference shift again, at the reference desk on Info Island. Each Friday evening, from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Why am I doing this to myself huh? Well, all because of a good cause, I guess...

But although in real life it got quite busy today, my shift in SL was not busy at all. Even my vast amount of groupies didn't show up this time... :-)

So? Boring! It went off and on. One moment I was kept pretty busy... and another moment I was all by myself again. I'll give you the statistics later, when I think about it... which I doubt. Yes, this second life looks at my real one in many ways...

RL and SL
Last time I told you about the difference between questions about SL and Real Life (RL). Also I told you about the value that some people give to them. And my own judgement was, that it is nonsense to value questions about SL less than other questions.

However, the one thing that I should have mentioned also - sorry, just forgot about it - was the following.

Look, in SL I am as free as a little bird. At times I would be better working at one of my projects. Because, why should I really? When I feel like biking or dancing or scuba diving in SL instead of working, I will do just that, won't I? I am here in my own time and unofficially.

But...

This does not count for everybody. Because, like I told you earlier, some do work in SL as part of their RL job. For the last couple of days I have tried to have some insights in that. Just by walking in and out here and there. Why do these libraries (with archives too sometimes) want a presence in SL in the first place? What sort of projects do they start? How do things work for them? That sort of things.

Anyway, they are there for work reasons. And because of that, they also have other obligations than I have. Other responsibillities even. To emphasise... They will have to account themselves for what they are doing and leaving. Just like with any other project, eventually.

And now - finally! - I will get back to you on the difference between value of SL and RL questions. Why are RL questions being given a higher value, although there is no reason for that in my eyes.

Any outsiders - people that have not used SL or are just very new still - value RL questions higher than they value SL questions. Quite logical really. It's like the first websites, that were also just meant to attract visitors to the physical buildings. Makes sense? One does have a certain way of looking at things to start with. Archives too have troubles with that, you know. Like we are just starting to value our website visitors as we value the people that visit our archives in person.

And still, many of our bosses are outsiders. And so, if they like to see RL questions, they just do. And that's why also many of the librarians in SL like to see RL questions too, even more than they like to have SL questions sometimes. Because it helps them to justify their presence in SL. That's the complete story.

Oh yes...
But still I can not just leave it like this... And I don't understand it fully. Because, if an organisation enters someting like SL... At this moment... You aren't really thinking about things as concrete as these, aren't you? In that case you'll just put some creative or inspiring minds over there, so I think, to explore this new world for your organisation? Without all too many rules and regulations or whatever for these minds? Because if you do, they will go working in specific ways, just to please their bosses, won't they? And I do not think that will work in the end.

Anyway... I am just that little bird, free, so what do I really know about all this huh?!
