Footnote: eindelijk een website rond archieven, 2.0 op en top, ongeveer een jaar geleden opgestart. Je kunt plaatjes kijken, bijzondere documenten in het zonnetje zetten, je eigen schoenendoos uploaden, verhalen maken en overal op reageren en doen.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Footnote every month to research, socialize, preserve their own pieces of history, and interact with over 24 million records currently available, as well as the millions of new records added each month.
Een paar weken geleden heb ik me daar ook eens aan gewaagd, om even lekker te werken met zo'n website, kijken hoe die bevalt. Inmiddels, op het moment dat ik dit typ, is
mijn verhaal 999 keer bekeken.
VoetnootHeel veel goeds dus.. en toch mist er iets, naar mijn gevoel. Als ik bijvoorbeeld kijk naar de
meest populaire verhalen (wat aantal
views betreft), dan zie ik dat er nauwelijks gereageerd wordt door mensen. Ook de
meest populaire spotlights blinken wat dat betreft niet uit in reacties. En ik heb niet alle plaatjes bekeken natuurlijk, maar zelfs de
Amerikaanse onafhankelijkheidsverklaring moet het met een schamele drie reacties doen.
Nu weet iedereen dat de kern van mensen die daadwerkelijk reageren en zo altijd klein is, maar in verhouding tot het aantal bezoekers en weergaves, is het hier wel héél erg klein.
Bij Footnote zou ik trouwens vaak ook niet weten waarop of waarover je zou moeten reageren. Er wordt geen vraag aan je gesteld, geen beroep op je herinneringen gedaan, geen wat dan ook. Dus het sociale gedeelte van de site valt helaas nogal mee, denk ik dan maar.
JeugdsentimentHoe anders is dat op een van mijn meest favoriete communitywebsites,
Jeugdsentimenten.net? Het
verhaal van vandaag (en het is nu zondagmorgen half negen) over theeworsten en anijsblokjes heeft al zeven reacties te pakken!
Ook hier heb ik in een grijs verleden eens wat verhaaltjes opgezet, om te kijken hoe dat aanspreekt. Op een verhaal over
verdwenen plekjes zijn inmiddels meer dan vijftig reacties gekomen, maar ook bijvoorbeeld een stukje over oude
veerpontjes mag zich in een grote belangstelling verheugen.
En dat het echt niet allemaal inhoudsloos is, bewijzen verhalen als over
volkskoffiehuizen, pas geleden nog geplaatst. Met relatief heel eenvoudige middelen is hier door een hobbyist een geweldig actieve club mensen in de weer. Verhalen worden geplaatst, kennis aangevuld en herinneringen uitgewisseld. Leuk!
Combineren of zo?Het moet dus allemaal niet te moeilijk. Het moet vooral niet te lang geleden. En het moet graag dichtbij huis. Dan werkt het wel. En dan denk ik, wat het toch mooi zou zijn als je zo'n site over jeugdsentimenten kon uitbreiden met een schoenendoos en zo.
Vraag ik me wel nog af hoe het gaat met zo'n project
Nederlands Erfgoed: Digitaal! Qua soort documenten klinkt dat een beetje als Footnote, dus ik ben bang dat het communitygebeuren dan wel gaat tegenvallen.. :-(

A couple of weeks ago I dared to take the step, to work a while with such a website, to see if it works for me. Right now, while typing this, my story has been viewed 999 times.FootnoteSo many good things.. and yet something is missing, according to my personal feeling. If, for example, I take a look at the most popular stories (with the most views, that is), then I notice that people hardly comment on things. Also the most popular spotlights aren't doing that great on comments. And of course I haven't watched all pictures, but even the American declaration of Independence has to live with the poor number of just three comments.Now everyone knows that the core of people who indeed comment and all that is actually very small, but compared to the number of visitors and views it's really very, very small here.Most of the time at Footnote I have no idea on what to comment anyway. There's no question asked, there's no appeal to your memories, no whatever what else. So the social part of this site is kind of disappointing, is how I think then.Youth sentimentHow different is this at one of my favorite websites, Jeugdsentimenten.net? The story of today (and it's Sunday morning 8.30am now) about tea sausages and anise blocks already has seven comments!Also here I have put down some stories long ago, to see if they appeal to people. A story about vanished places by now has been commented on more than fifty times, but also a story about old, little ferryboats is quite popular.And that not everything is meaningless, is proven by stories such as about people's coffee houses, posted recently. With relatively easy tools an amateur here set up a community of very active people. Stories are being posted, knowledge added, and memories shared. Fun!Combine or so?So it all shouldn't be that difficult. It all shouldn't be too long ago. And it has to be close to home preferably. Then it will work just fine. And then I think, that it would be so nice if you could just expand a site about youth sentiments with a shoe box and so on.Last, I still question a project like Nederlands Erfgoed: Digitaal! (Dutch Heritage: Digital!) The type of documents seems the same as on Footnote, so I'm afraid the community thingie will be disappointing then.. :-(
