Ieder einde markeert een nieuw begin / Every ending marks a new beginning

For English translation, please see the blue text below

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the end of Second Life (SL). That end will come sometime, or at least an end to my presence over there.

Just today I had another look at this message about the life after Second Life, especially because of the replies to that message. Where people a year ago would still compete to be the first to say that Second Life would fail big time, right now they try even harder for being right all along. Such a nonsense really.

Luckily there were also some wise replies, from people that like me see Second Life as just a phase in a development on the road to 3D-applications for the internet (see various posts on this blog).

So will the entire internet be three-dimensional? Oh no, of course not.. but as said earlier and like also the message up here shows, virtual worlds will, next to other forms of online communities, have a big influence on our ways to communicate, share knowledge, work together and so on on the web.

But anyway, as for now, I myself have lots of things to discover on the area of archives and reference. On the other side it's most of all the community itself that keeps me there, because you'll meet so many people with so many interesting ideas.

A week ago Alliance Library System, the organization that is also behind the library thing in SL, amongst others, had setup a new group: Virtual Worlds and Libraries Alliance. Its goal is to exchange knowledge about virtual worlds and the opportunities for libraries, so not especially related to SL.

Always when you think..
So here one of the few personal outpourings on this blog: I'm a huge fan of Stef Bos. In the lyrics of the song Duizend Jaar -- Thousand Years (available on the cd Ruimtevaarder -- Astronaut) the following lines are at the start:

Always when you think
This is the end
You stand on the border
Of what begins

I'm strongly convinced that I'll someday have to give up that silly little orange guy called Christi Janus.. but I know for sure that that will be the beginning of a whole new period of time with lots of more discoveries! With whatever name, with whatever colour.. ;-)
