Zo, sinds afgelopen zondag hebben de archivarissen in Second Life (SL) een missie. Tijdens een aantal bijeenkomsten hebben we bedacht wat we allemaal kunnen doen, willen doen... moeten doen. Die brainstormlijst is door iemand vertaald naar een missie. En dat is...

• To promote the profession of records/archives preservation and records/archives access in and through Second Life.



• To provide education, research and networking opportunities for archivists in and through Second Life.



• To provide leadership in the identification of records/archives of historical value to the residents of Second Life.

Nou, da's toch best ambitieus! Het hoeft ook niet allemaal volgende week al af te zijn hoor. We hebben wat tijd.

Prioriteiten
Verder zijn we aan het werken aan onze doelstellingen. Het eerste wat we willen doen, is het geven van een presentatie over archieven en archivarissen. En wel voor een publiek van bibliothecarissen en andere informatieprofessionals in SL.

Dat is nodig, want velen hebben niet echt kennis van wat archieven precies zijn. Of wat archivarissen nu eigenlijk doen. Anders dan in het echte leven, word ik in SL vaak door anderen aangesproken met vragen als: Wat is een archivaris? En wat archiveer je? Komt zeker door dat label boven m'n hoofd... ;-)

Veel van de mensen die ik tegenkom denken dat een archivaris gewoon een soort van speciale bibliothecaris is. Iemand die oude documenten verzamelt en bewaart. Maar op punten is dat natuurlijk net zo ver van de waarheid, als het oosten is van het westen. Dus enige voorlichting zou wel goed zijn.

Panelen
Een tweede project wat we op willen pakken is het maken van een soort tentoonstelling over archieven. Het idee is om in bijvoorbeeld tien panelen een overzicht te geven van verschillende archieven door de eeuwen heen. Van kleitablet tot CD-Rom, zal ik maar zeggen. De panelen zouden eruit kunnen zien als de archieven zelf of zoiets. En natuurlijk kunnen mensen ook wat informatie krijgen.

Maar goed, het idee moet ik nog verder uitdenken. Gelukkig zijn er anderen in de groep met bouw- en scriptkwaliteiten... want ik moet daarin nog wat oefenen. Alhoewel, het zal wel iets worden als op het werk voor mij: als een ander iets al kan, probeer ik op andere vlakken wel van nut te zijn. (Overigens is dat bouwen en zo best leuk! Dus wie weet...)

Nog een archivaris!
Oh ja, de archivarissen struikelen de laatste tijd over elkaar heen, bij het binnentreden van SL! Peter van Garderen kon zich na een tijdje volgen van mijn blog ook niet meer inhouden... en hij kwam naar SL! Goed om te zien. Lees ook eens zijn blog trouwens, erg interessant. Ook voor de archivarissen in SL, denk ik.

Well, as of last Sunday the archivists in Second Life (SL) have a misson statement. During some meetings we have thought about all the things we could do, wanted to do... must do even. This brainstorm list has been transferred by someone to a real mission statement. Which is...

• To promote the profession of records/archives preservation and records/archives access in and through Second Life.



• To provide education, research and networking opportunities for archivists in and through Second Life.

So, pretty ambitious! But we do not need to have all work done by next week, you know. We've got some time.

Priorities
Furthermore we are working on our objectives statement. The first thing what we would like to do, is to give a presentation about archives and archivists. For an audience of librarians and other information professionals, that is.

This is really necessary, because many of them around have no actual knowledge about what archives are exactly. Or what archivists do anyway. Totally different than in real life, in SL I am often asked by strangers questions like: What is an archivist? And what do you archive? Must be the tag above my head... ;-)

Many of the people I encounter believe an archivist is just some sort of a special kind librarian. Someone that collects and preserves old documents. However, on many points their view is as far from reality as the east is from the west. So some education would be a good thing.

Displays
A second project we would like to work on is making displays about archives. My idea is, for example, to make about ten displays that give an overview about different archives throughout time. From clay tablet to CD-Rom, something like that. The displays could even look like the archives they are about. And of course visitors can obtain some information about them.

Anyway, I have to work on the idea still. Luckily there are others in the group that can build and script very well... because I have to practice some more on these things. Although I think the same here will happen as happens at my work: whenever someone else is good at doing a certain thing, I will better try to be of some use at another thing. (By the way, the building is quite fun! So who knows what will happen...)

Another archivist!
Oh yes, the archivists are really stumbling over each other lately, while entering SL! Peter van Garderen, after following my blog for a while, could not restrain himself anymore either... and he came to SL! Good to see. Read his blog, by the way, very interesting. Also for the archivists in SL, I think.
