Big Brother en brandgagement: een stapje verder / Big Brother and brandgagement: one step further

For English translation, please see the blue text below

With SM2, organizations can locate blogs or wikis on the internet that mention the organization or its business. Once SM2 finds blogs or wikis mentioning the organization, they can be watched for any set of keywords or phrases to ensure that the wrong things aren't being said (defamatory comments, curse words, etc), confidential information isn't being given away, or other liability risks aren't being created online. Hopefully, SM2 will help companies that are scared about letting their employees use blog or wikis feel comfortable with these tools and let their employees begin using them.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Somewhere during the infant time of my existence as a blogger, I once wrote a little article about brandgagement. Back then I linked that to what archives could do on that level and where we at the BHIC are already heading for in a way. By the way, the article was more about the commercial-business use of this.

And in relation to this I happened to receive an e-mail in my mailbox this last week from the developers of BlogBackupOnline, a handy service with which you can easily backup your blog, including comments and pictures, and download it as a xml-file.

The suppliers of this service, the company Techrigy, now have thought about something new, called SM2, a Social Media Manager.

Besides some sort of Big Brother-feature, which will browse your intranet for possible damaging blog entries and such things, the package also includes features for searching the digital world elsewhere. For example it's possible to specify which blogs and wikis have to be monitored specifically, regarding mentioning your company's name. Next to that it's possible to fill in certain words and phrases which have to be used while searching.

Of course -- same as half the world of bloggers -- I make use of Technorati myself, but for companies that will like to start seriously with brandgagement (or who just want to keep track of what their employees are dragging to the web..) new tools like SM2 seem a better weapon.

But still to me it doesn't really feel comfortable.. One fragment from the e-mail:

With SM2, organizations can locate blogs or wikis on the internet that mention the organization or its business. Once SM2 finds blogs or wikis mentioning the organization, they can be watched for any set of keywords or phrases to ensure that the wrong things aren't being said (defamatory comments, curse words, etc), confidential information isn't being given away, or other liability risks aren't being created online. Hopefully, SM2 will help companies that are scared about letting their employees use blog or wikis feel comfortable with these tools and let their employees begin using them.

Especially that last sentence eh?

I find brandgagement as a marketing instrument good thinking. You can use it to both to your own as well as anothers' advantage. But the way this new SM2 is presented, looks more like making use of the fear of managers, for the seemingly elusive nature of the way too free internet, so to speak. And that seems hardly like a healthy idea to me.

Ah well, doesn't make the product any worse, of course.. It's more the way the sales talk is presented. But anyway, after having said all of this, I expect a reaction from Techrigy pretty soon.. ;-)

2 opmerkingen:
