De Greenies en iets waar Second Life goed voor is / The Greenies and something that Second Life is good for

For English translation, please see the blue text below

Ervaren!

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Already on various occasions I've written about the added value of virtual worlds such as Second Life (SL) and so on. Usually it had to do with work-related things. So the added value for (archival) customer services. But fortunately as far as virtual words are concerned this value goes on further than that. So this time not something work-related.. also because it's still my vacation for a very little while! :-)

Greenies
This week alone I've already visited the world of the Greenies several times. This world starts in a tunnel below ground level. Walking through the tunnel, you'll see some pieces of newspapers here and there, like the article about the UFO that was found at Roswell. A sign for the things you may expect later on.

At the end of the tunnel, you'll crawl through a hole into the side of a house. Nothing special so far, although the house looks rather empty. Until you're eventually really taken aback when walking through the rooms, to the front door. Only then the house you just walked through really appears to be a dollhouse instead..

..and from the threshold of that dollhouse you look in the room of a home where for sure giants must be living! (Or you could believe that your avatar has shrunk all of a sudden, like I heard someone ask for in fear!) As for yourself, you're even not big enough to look over a can of beer..

The living room looks like retro 50's. On the television - when you find the remote control after a while of flying, of course next to the can of beer -- plays Radar Men from the Moon: Battle in the Stratosphere, but most of all the colours give the whole room (and the kitchen) the look of half a century back in time.

You enter the room at the same time the Greenies have started invading it. Little, green men who came from space to let the parakeet free, to mess around with the toothpaste or made a home of the bread bin. The Greenies will be good to make you smile, while wandering through the room, and especially flying through it. A trip between the living room and the kitchen walking will take much of your time otherwise! :-)

Experience!
Because the real kick comes from the room, especially the size and detailed work of it. For some background information you could read an article in The Metaverse Messenger (page 1 and 23), the M2, one of the newspapers in SL.

I once read Erik of Het klein instectenboek (Erik or The little book about insects), written by Godfried Bomans in the period of surrealism, and later I saw a movie Honey, I shrunk the Kids, one of those feel-good Walt Disney family comedy's. But anyway, the thing that book and movie have in common, are little people, who somehow become dropped in a world of giants..

Now Erik was getting smaller himself and stepped happily into the painting called Wollewei to learn something about insects and also the kids from the movie became little themselves.. Being with the Greenies that's all a little less obvious. Are you that small yourself or is that room just that big?

But to put it briefly: quite an experience! The combination of good design, use of colours, music, sound effects, the movie playing on television, the funny little space men, the other avatars who're walking around.. Everything fits so perfectly into this virtual world, that for sure you may say this is one of the best places that I've been visiting so far!

Because who didn't ever want to wander around in a world of giants, after reading such a book or after viewing such a movie? I did!!

SL may very well be a virtual world, but many sims are still build to real life examples. Just copies.. although they can be copied beautifully , of course. Many things you'll encounter in SL, could also be done elsewhere, for example on the internet.. even better. Flat pictures, long texts.. and more of those kind of things. You don't have to enter SL for that reason -- Spare yourself the trouble.

But for a sim as from the Greenies I advice you to download the software some time. Because at this place really the added value of virtual worlds is shown in a great way, like I mentioned earlier for the Vincent van Gogh-museum.

Ok, enough words for now.. You should see this for yourself.. and experience!

1 opmerking:
