Archieven en e-Cultuur / Archives and e-Culture

For English translation, please see the blue text below

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Tomorrow I'll be standing in front of a class again! :-) Like in my best days as a teacher..

Together with my colleague Luud de Brouwer, webmaster at the Regional Archives in Tilburg, I'll be teaching a class about Archives and e-Culture at the Reinwardt Academy in Amsterdam, the only college in the field of cultural heritage in the Netherlands, according to their website.

Luud will mostly address the past and present, while I myself will try to say something useful about the future. For the most part that will be the same story as I presented to my colleagues at the KVAN Conference on May 30th earlier this year (also follow the link to find the English translation for the PowerPoint I used back then, which is almost the same as I used for this class, which is shown at the top of this entry).

As I understood, the students knew something about archives, but not that much. Here and there we'll have to guess as to how we can deal with that. So a little bit of freewheeling.. which is easy to do with my own presentation. And it will have to be done like that anyway, because in those three months also I have seen and done lots of new things.

Kuypers maps
The changes in my PowerPoint are minor ones though. But I am very glad that by coincidence -- because a patron asked me a question and I clicked the wrong link -- I found a website again, that I saw once before, but which I lost track of after that. The website Netherlands 1858-1870 shows a very beautiful Google mashup, in which the maps from Jacob Kuypers Gemeente-atlas van Nederland are combined with the satellite images from Google.

For anyone who knows about Kuypers maps, it is clear that it is quite some work to stick all of these little maps together, in a way that they also match with the maps from Google. Especially the hybrid picture is very well done. Find yourself some nice, old spots.. and watch how assuming the airs of a big city has spoiled much of the surrounding country.. :-(

This specific customer wanted to do something similar (so that's why I thought about this link), but then with the maps from the land registry in 1832 (the oldest maps from the land registry offices in the Netherlands), all to be seen at the website of De Woonomgeving. Ah well, I for one was glad to have found this link again! So I was able to quickly shuffle it into my PowerPoint! :-)
