Zonder zoeken ben je verloren / Without search, you're lost

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Even the finest reference employee is nowhere without proper access tools. If you can't search for anything, then you won't find anything either. So a good search system is essential for our jobs.

That's why many of the information professionals in Second Life (SL) are very annoyed with the search options that Linden Lab fobbed us off with. If it works at all, then it will work badly, without too many options and without too many access points. In the meanwhile different applications have been developed for use in and outside SL, that offer more search options than SL does itself. One good example from those is the Second Life Search Toolbar by Guus van den Brekel (Namro Orman in SL).

But rescue is near!

More, more.. most!
Today I read on the SL blog that a new SL search system will arrive soon, next to the existing one. The options for looking for land parcels, for residents, groups and for events will all stay, of course, but will be improved. For example will it be possible to find residents not only by their name, but also by information in their further profile.

Also there will be an option for searching for objects, for example which are for sale. That way you can easily search for something that might be of any use for your work, without needing to invent the wheel yourself.

Better, better.. best!
The Lindens have bought Google's motor to make this all happen. That will also make sure that - anyway, that's how I understand it - search results will also be accessible via the web. And that search engines will be able to index data within SL.

By the way, you yourself can list whether you want your profile to be included, or the things that you built or your land parcel or whatever. So it's not like your whole second life is thrown on the street now.. or worse: on Google!

I find for that matter that Linden Lab does often underline the fact that they do not cooperate with Google, but have merely bought a little piece of software from them. Like they're feeling ashamed or something like that.. ;-)

Besides that, it is a blessing that search results will be ordered by relevance. And, too, that you will have options for personalizing the search system, by adjusting various settings. For example, which kind of things have to be included when using search?

Well, I can hardly wait.. but will have to anyway. About until December. Work will be so much easier then.. I hope!
