Verkenners, pioniers en kolonisten / Scouts, pioneers and colonists

Eind januari gaf ik op het BHIC de aftrap voor een nieuwe expeditie richting Zuidland. Die reis was iedereen het afgelopen jaar goed bevallen, dus we varen nieuwsgierig nog wat zeeën verder.

Daarom zijn drie werkgroepen vorige en deze week voor het eerst bij elkaar gekomen, met daarin verkenners, pioniers en kolonisten. Alledrie de groepen bewegen zich op een andere afstand van het behouden huis; de verkenners gaan het verst vooruit, de kolonisten blijven achter en ontginnen de eerder ontdekte gebieden, en de pioniers tenslotte werken daar ergens tussenin.

Verkenners
De verkenners hebben dan ook vooral tot taak nieuwe ontdekkingen te doen. Ze zoeken bijvoorbeeld naar websites die hen inspireren. Websites die misschien ogenschijnlijk helemaal niks met archieven van doen hebben, maar die iets in zich hebben waar een archiefdienst wel degelijk veel mee kan.

Zelf lichtte ik het project We Fee Fine toe, met dank aan Tim, die me een hele poos geleden de tip gaf.

Pioniers
De pioniers gaan proberen een of twee toepassingen te maken voor het hele brede publiek. Ze maken daarbij gebruik van het schitterende materiaal in onze eigen archiefcollecties, maar zetten dat in met behulp van nieuwe gereedschappen.

Tijdens de presentatie liet ik als voorbeeld de populaire Flickr-toepassing van de Library of Congress zien. En zo zijn er nog talloze andere voorbeelden.

Kolonisten
En dan de kolonisten, die zich gaan laten onderdompelen in het communitygebeuren op internet, om uiteindelijk te komen tot een plan voor dat deel van de nieuwe website van het BHIC. Ook díe site kent namelijk al een levendige community van mensen die verhalen insturen, reageren op foto's, en vragen stellen en beantwoorden op forums.. maar we willen natuurlijk weer een stap verder.

De PowerPoint hieronder licht alvast een tipje van de sluier op, maar in de komende dagen zal ik alle groepen eens wat beter aan jullie voorstellen. Dan weet iedereen wat we zo'n beetje aan het doen zijn op het BHIC.. ;-)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

At the end of January I gave the kick off for a new expedition with destination South Land at the BHIC. Everyone had enjoyed that voyage very much last year, so with curiosity we shall sail some seas further.

That's why last and this week three work groups, with scouts, pioneers and colonists, came together for the first time. All three groups are moving at different distances from the home base; the scouts lead the way the most far away, the colonists stay behind and settle themselves on grounds that have been discovered earlier, and last the pioneers work somewhere in between the other two groups.

Scouts
So the scouts most of all have the task to do new explorations. For example they'll search for websites that inspire them. Websites that at first glance don't seem to have anything to do at all with archives, but yet have something in them that an archives could use in a lot of ways anyway.

I illustrated this with the project We Feel Fine myself, with gratitude to Tim, who gave me the tip a while ago.

Pioneers
The pioneers will try to develop one or two applications for a broad audience. They'll make use of the beautiful stuff which can be found in our archives, but will exploit this with the help of new tools.

During the presentation I explained this by showing the popular Flickr application of the Library of Congress as an example. And many more examples like that one can be found.

Colonists
And then we have the colonists, who will let themselves be drowned in community life happening on the internet, which in the end will lead to a plan about something like that for a part of our own website. Also thát site already has an active community involved with people who submit stories, comment on pictures, and ask and answer questions on the forums.. but of course yet again we want to take things one step further.

The PowerPoint below already shows some of all of this, but in the next few days I shall introduce all groups a little bit better to you. Then everybody will know what kind of thing we are doing at the BHIC.. ;-)
